Michael is a Detroit-based studio artist, visual art educator, and cultural storyteller whose work explores the profound relationship between place and waterbodies. Raised in Detroit, his early artistic worldview was shaped by a unique blend of comic book iconography and frequent, transformative visits to the Detroit Institute of Arts. Today, this duality informs a practice rooted in drawing and painting that captures both local identity and environmental narrative.
Michael’s academic and professional achievements include numerous art activity awards, graduate scholarships, and a Graduate Teaching Assistantship at Wayne State University. An active voice in the regional art scene, he has exhibited widely across the Detroit area and was selected for the Port Austin Artist-in-Residence program. Constantly engaging with the broader implications of his work, Michael recently collaborated with Wayne State faculty as a presenter at the Humanities Center symposium focusing on Water/Sheds.
Deeply committed to the community that raised him, Michael balances his studio practice with a dedicated career in public art education. Through his teaching, he works to make a lasting, positive impact on the lives of young people, bridging the gap between contemporary art practice and community enrichment.
